Having talented employees with diverse interests in a development team can lead to unexpected results. Some years ago, while reading about the mathematical constant π, I realized that DECTRIS has all the expertise and most of the equipment to perform a world record computation of this famous number. With the help of the software and ICT department, we could assemble a fast and ample storage, capable of handling trillions of digits of π. End of 2016 - after 105 days of number crunching - DECTRIS could announce a new world record computation with πe trillion digits of π.
The π record allowed DECTRIS to attract the attention of the local as well as the international press. The most recent publication appeared on March 1st as a contribution to the Measure for Measurecolumn in Nature Physics. As we learned on this year’s Pi Day, even Google noticed our record and decided to pursue the trail blazed by DECTRIS with the computation of π·1013 digits of π. With the usage of their cloud infrastructure, another chapter of the 4,000 year old history of computation of π has been opened up.
